Alan Turing (1912-1954) - He laid the Theoretical Foundations of Modern Computing and also led the effort to break the German encryption system (Enigma machine) during WW II. "Turing Award" (equivalent to the Nobel for computer science and technology) is named in his honor.

He proposed a test for determining whether a machine can match human intelligence that have a modern application in the web.
