I am interested in the study of history focusing on the mechanisms underlying events rather than chronologies. My favorite history book is the classic The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire by Edward Gibbon (1737-1794). Not only it is a masterpiece in its own right, it also covers a period of history when "globalization" (it was called Pax Romana then) ran supreme and led to disasters. The events of that period provide several lessons for the present times. The same period is also quite important  for both the Greek and Jewish civilizations. The history of these two people and the interaction of their cultures is of particular interest to me.
