Brief Obituary of Bernard Lewis
(author of many books cited in these pages)

From the May 22, 2018 Daily dispatch from The Economist

Bernard Lewis, the West’s pre-eminent scholar on the Middle East, died at the weekend. A Jewish Londoner, Mr Lewis enjoyed tea with the Shah of Iran and the last king of Afghanistan. But he struggled with the present. After anti-American revolutions swept Iran and Afghanistan, he grew reactionary, nostalgic and bitter, and became a darling of the neoconservatives. His historical work will be remembered; his policy assessments probably not.
